Everyone gets into groups of three. Two people stand facing each other and join hands to create an arch they are the tree, the third person crouches underneath it and becomes the squirrel. You need one extra person to be the ‘caller’. (If you have odd numbers you can have two callers)The caller can shout one of three things: 1 – “Hunter” If hunter is shouted then all the squirrels run to a new ‘tree’ the ‘caller’ then tries to steal the place of a squirrel. If they are successful then the person left without a tree becomes the new ‘caller’ (*The trees do not move) 2 – “Fire” If fire is shouted the trees move to a new squirrel, they must find a new partner to create a tree over a squirrel. The ‘caller’ then tries to steal the place of a tree leaving someone new out and they become the new ‘caller’. 3 – “Earthquake” If this is shouted then everyone moves and takes a new position as either a tree or a squirrel. Again the ‘caller steals someone’s place and a new ‘caller is made.

Objective

Squirrels is a fun and active game that encourages quick thinking and teamwork. The aim is to avoid being left without a place during the game’s various calls: “Hunter,” “Fire,” and “Earthquake.”

Setup

  1. Groups: Divide players into groups of three.
    • Two players in each group stand facing each other, joining hands to form an arch. They are the trees.
    • The third player crouches underneath the arch. They are the squirrel.
  2. Caller: Designate one extra person to be the caller. If there are odd numbers, you can have two callers.

How to Play

Basic Rules

  • The caller shouts one of three commands: “Hunter,” “Fire,” or “Earthquake.”
  • The players then respond according to the command given.
  • The caller’s objective is to take the place of a squirrel or a tree, depending on the call. The player left without a place becomes the new caller.

Commands

  1. Hunter
    • When the caller shouts “Hunter,” all the squirrels must quickly leave their current tree and run to find a new tree.
    • The caller attempts to take the place of a squirrel.
    • If the caller successfully takes a place, the squirrel left without a tree becomes the new caller.
    • Trees do not move during this call.
  2. Fire
    • When the caller shouts “Fire,” all the trees must break their arches and quickly find a new partner to form a tree over a new squirrel.
    • The caller tries to take the place of a tree.
    • If the caller successfully takes a place, the tree left without a squirrel becomes the new caller.
    • Squirrels do not move during this call.
  3. Earthquake
    • When the caller shouts “Earthquake,” everyone moves and takes a new position as either a tree or a squirrel.
    • The caller tries to take the place of either a tree or a squirrel.
    • The player left without a place becomes the new caller.

Game End

The game continues for as long as the players enjoy, with the caller role rotating among players.

Tips for Success

  • Be Alert: Always listen carefully to the caller’s command.
  • Quick Movement: Move swiftly to avoid being left without a place.
  • Team Coordination: Trees need to quickly find new partners during the “Fire” command.
