Game Overview

Freeze Tag is a classic outdoor game where one player is designated as “it” and tries to tag the other players. When a player is tagged, they must freeze in place until another player tags them to “unfreeze” them. The game continues until everyone is frozen.

Game Rules

Objective

  • The objective of the game for the player who is “it” is to freeze all other players.
  • The objective for the other players is to avoid being frozen and to unfreeze their teammates.

Setup

  1. Choose an open outdoor space with clear boundaries.
  2. Select one player to be “it.”
  3. All other players scatter within the designated play area.

How to Play

  1. Starting the Game: The game begins with the player who is “it” counting to a predetermined number (e.g., 10) with their eyes closed, while the other players spread out.
  2. Tagging: The player who is “it” then tries to tag as many players as possible. When a player is tagged, they must freeze in place, standing still like a statue.
  3. Unfreezing: Frozen players can be unfrozen by another player who is not “it.” To unfreeze a player, an unfrozen player must tag the frozen player.
  4. Winning the Game: The game continues until the player who is “it” has managed to freeze all other players, or until a set time limit is reached. If all players are frozen, the player who is “it” wins. If time runs out with players still unfrozen, the non-it players win.

Additional Rules

  • Players must stay within the boundaries of the play area. If a player steps outside the boundaries, they are considered frozen until tagged back in by another player.
  • Players cannot unfreeze a frozen player if they are also tagged while attempting to do so.
  • The player who is “it” cannot guard a frozen player to prevent others from unfreezing them.

Variations

  • Multiple “Its”: For larger groups, you can have more than one player be “it” to make the game more challenging.
  • Safe Zones: Designate certain areas as safe zones where players cannot be tagged. Players can only stay in the safe zones for a limited time (e.g., 10 seconds).

End of the Game

  • After each round, a new player is chosen to be “it,” and the game starts over.
  • Play continues for as many rounds as the players desire.

Safety Tips

  • Ensure the play area is free of obstacles and hazards.
  • Remind players to tag gently to avoid injury.
  • Make sure all players are aware of the boundaries and rules before starting the game.
