A variation of dodgeball played in a pit or arena, where players try to hit each other below the waist with a ball while avoiding being hit themselves.

Game Rules

Objective

The objective of Gaga Ball is to eliminate other players by hitting them with the ball below the waist while avoiding being hit yourself. The last player remaining in the pit is declared the winner.

Setup

  1. Arena: A gaga pit or arena, typically a hexagonal or octagonal enclosure with walls around 3-4 feet high.
  2. Ball: A soft, bouncy ball, such as a foam or rubber ball.
  3. Players: A minimum of 4 and a maximum of 30 players can participate. Players should be at least 5 years old.

Basic Rules

  1. All players start inside the pit, touching the wall.
  2. The game begins with a countdown, and the ball is thrown into the center of the pit.
  3. Players can hit the ball with their hands but are not allowed to catch, throw, or kick it.
  4. If a player is hit below the waist by the ball, they are out and must leave the pit.
  5. If the ball goes out of the pit, the last person to touch it is out.
  6. If a player hits the ball and it strikes another player above the waist, the hitter is out.
  7. Players must stay within the pit’s boundaries; stepping outside means they are out.
  8. The game continues until only one player remains.

Variations

  • No Outs: Players hit below the waist are not out but must perform a penalty (e.g., hopping on one foot for 10 seconds).
  • Team Play: Players are divided into teams, and the game is played until all members of one team are out.
  • Multiple Balls: For a more challenging game, introduce additional balls into the pit.

How to Play

Starting the Game

  1. Gather all players inside the gaga pit.
  2. Have players touch the wall to start.
  3. Designate a referee or a player to throw the ball into the center.
  4. Begin the game with a loud shout of “Ga!” or a countdown from three.

Playing the Game

  1. Players hit the ball with an open or closed hand.
  2. Players should constantly move to avoid being hit and to position themselves to hit others.
  3. When hit below the waist, players must leave the pit immediately.
  4. The game continues rapidly, with players being eliminated until only one remains.

Winning the Game

  • The last player left in the pit is the winner.
  • Players can immediately start a new round with the same rules.

Safety Tips

  • Ensure the playing surface inside the pit is free of hazards.
  • Encourage fair play and sportsmanship.
  • Have an adult or referee supervise the game, especially with younger children.
