Kubb, a traditional Swedish lawn game, involves players alternately throwing wooden batons to knock over wooden blocks (kubbs) before aiming to knock over the king. Elements of bowling and horseshoes are combined in this game, which is played on grass or sand.

Overview

Kubb is a traditional Swedish lawn game that challenges players to throw wooden batons to knock over wooden blocks called kubbs, and ultimately a central piece known as the king. The game incorporates elements from bowling and horseshoes and can take place on either grass or sand.

Players

  • Number of Players: 3-12
  • Minimum Age: 6 years old

Game Setup

Playing Field

Set up a rectangular playing field, typically measuring 5 meters by 8 meters, on grass or sand.

Equipment Needed

  • 10 wooden kubbs (blocks)
  • 6 wooden batons
  • 1 wooden king
  • Boundary markers to outline the field

Initial Setup

  • Evenly space 5 kubbs on each baseline.
  • Position the king in the center of the field.

Game Rules

Teams

Split the players into two teams, each with an equal number of players.

Starting the Game

A coin toss decides which team will throw first. The starting team throws all six batons from behind their baseline, aiming to knock over the kubbs on the opposing team’s baseline.

Knocking Over Kubbs

  • After the initial turn, the opposing team throws any knocked-over kubbs back into the field, setting them upright where they land. These become field kubbs.
  • On subsequent turns, teams must knock over the field kubbs before targeting the baseline kubbs.

Knocking Over the King

Once a team has knocked over all the opposing team’s baseline kubbs, they may target the king. The team that knocks over the king wins the game.

Penalty for Early King Knockdown

If a team knocks over the king before clearing all the kubbs, that team loses the game.

Scoring

  • Winning: The first team to knock over all the opposing team’s baseline kubbs and the king wins the game.

Additional Rules

Throwing Batons

Players must throw batons underhand and from behind the baseline.

Kubbs Placement

If a thrown kubb lands out of bounds, the player can re-throw it up to two times. If it still lands out of bounds after two attempts, the opposing team places it within the field of play.

Variations

  • Field Size: Adjust the field size based on the age and skill level of the players.
  • Team Size: Vary the number of players on each team depending on the total number of participants.
