Overview
Sitting Volleyball is a fun and engaging variation of traditional volleyball where players must remain seated on the ground. Perfect for small groups, this game can be played indoors or outdoors with minimal equipment. The rules mirror standard volleyball but add the challenge of staying seated throughout the game.
Setup
Equipment Needed
- Volleyball net (or rope, fabric, etc.)
- Two chairs to support the net
- Volleyball
- Painter’s tape to mark boundaries
Court Preparation
- Net Setup: String the net (or substitute) across two chairs to create the playing net.
- Mark Boundaries: Use painter’s tape to mark the court boundaries on the ground. Make the court rectangular and size it appropriately for the playing area and number of players.
Rules
Basic Rules
- Players must remain seated on the ground at all times, sitting cross-legged.
- Follow standard volleyball rules, including serving, volleying, and scoring, with adaptations for the seated position.
Serving
- The server serves the ball from a seated position behind the baseline.
- Serve underhand to accommodate the seated position.
Playing the Ball
- Players can use any part of their body to hit the ball, but they must remain seated.
- Hit the ball over the net within three touches by one team.
- Players can play the ball off any part of the body but cannot catch or throw it.
Scoring
- Score a point when the opposing team fails to return the ball within three touches, hits the ball out of bounds, or violates any game rules.
- Play games to 15 points, and a team must win by at least 2 points.
Rotation
- Teams rotate positions clockwise after winning a point from the opposing team’s serve.
- Players should maintain their seated positions during rotations.
How to Play
- Form Teams: Divide players into two teams with an equal number of players.
- Position Players: Have all players sit cross-legged on their respective sides of the court.
- Start the Game: One team starts by serving the ball from behind their baseline.
- Play Continues: Teams rally the ball back and forth, trying to score points by landing the ball in the opposing team’s court or forcing an error.
- Score Points: Keep track of points on a scoreboard. The first team to reach 15 points wins the game, provided they have a 2-point lead.
Game Duration
Each game lasts approximately 15-30 minutes, depending on the pace of play and the number of points needed to win.
Player Conduct
- Encourage sportsmanship. Players should respect each other and play fair.
