Players gather in a circle, with one designated as “It.” The game begins as “It” throws the ball in the air, calling out another player’s name, prompting everyone to scatter. The newly designated player (“New It”) takes possession of the ball, shouting “STOP.” Holding the ball, the “New It” advances four steps toward a chosen “Target” without jumping. The objective is to hit the “Target” with the ball without skipping it or aiming for the head. The “Target” cannot jump, but can dodge or catch the ball with feet on the ground. If successful, the “Target” becomes “It.” If the “New It” hits the “Target,” they become the new “It,” and the cycle repeats. The game continues until a final showdown between the last two players determines the winner.

  2. Age Limit: Suitable for ages 12 and up.
  3. Duration: Typically 20-40 minutes, depending on the number of players and rounds.
  4. Required Items:
    • A soft ball (e.g., a playground ball or dodgeball)

How to Play

  1. Preparation:
    • Choose a large, open outdoor area where players can move freely.
    • Gather all players in a circle.
    • Select one player to start as “It.”
  2. Starting the Game:
    • “It” stands in the center of the circle with the ball.
    • “It” throws the ball high into the air and calls out the name of another player.
    • All players scatter away from the circle as quickly as possible.
  3. New “It”:
    • The player whose name was called (“New It”) must catch or retrieve the ball.
    • Once the “New It” has the ball, they shout “STOP,” and all players must freeze in place.
  4. Targeting:
    • “New It” takes four steps towards any player of their choice (“Target”).
    • Without jumping, “New It” throws the ball at the “Target,” aiming for the body but avoiding the head.
  5. Outcome:
    • If the “New It” successfully hits the “Target,” the “Target” becomes the new “It.”
    • If the “Target” dodges or catches the ball with feet on the ground, the “New It” remains “It” for the next round.
    • Continue the game, repeating the process with each new “It.”
  6. Final Showdown:
    • The game continues until only two players remain.
    • These two players face off in a final showdown to determine the winner.
    • The winner is the player who successfully avoids being hit or hits the other player with the ball.

Rules and Tips

  • No Head Shots: Ensure players aim for the body and avoid head shots.
  • Stay Grounded: The “Target” can dodge or catch the ball but must keep their feet on the ground.
  • Fair Play: Players must freeze immediately when “STOP” is called.
  • Safety: Play in an open area free of obstacles to prevent injuries.

Variations

  • Time Limit: Introduce a time limit for each round to keep the game moving quickly.
  • Advanced Steps: Allow “New It” to take fewer steps or implement a rule where they can only pivot on one foot.
