1. Get players to sit in a circle facing inwards. 2. Pick a player to start. Tell this player to come up with a sentence or phrase and then whisper (or “pass it on”) to the person next to them. 3. They must only whisper it once, even if the player next to them asks to hear it again. 4. Each player will then whisper it to the next player around the circle. 5. When the final player receives the whisper they must say what they heard out loud to the whole group. The starting player can then say what the initial phrase was and the group can marvel out how well they did in keeping the phrase correct, or laugh at how much it changed!

Overview

Telephone Whisper is a fun and interactive game that relies on players’ ability to correctly pass along a message through whispers. It is a game of laughter and surprises, perfect for groups ranging from 10 to 25 players. The goal is to see how much the message changes as it is whispered from one person to the next.

Objective

The objective of Telephone is to pass a message from the first player to the last player as accurately as possible. The amusement comes from the inevitable alterations and misinterpretations that occur as the message is whispered around the circle.

Setup

  1. Players: 10-25
  2. Age: 12 and above
  3. Duration: Approximately 15-30 minutes
  4. Materials Needed: None

Instructions

  1. Form a Circle:
    • Arrange all players in a circle, facing inwards. Ensure everyone is close enough to whisper to their neighbor but still has enough space to avoid overhearing the whispers meant for others.
  2. Choose a Starting Player:
    • Select one player to start the game. This player will think of a sentence or phrase. Encourage creativity, but ensure the sentence is not too long or complex to remember.
  3. Whisper the Message:
    • The starting player whispers the sentence or phrase to the player sitting to their right. They must only whisper it once, even if the receiving player asks to hear it again. No repetitions are allowed to ensure the integrity of the game.
  4. Pass It On:
    • Each subsequent player whispers what they heard to the next player to their right. This continues until the message reaches the final player in the circle.
  5. Reveal the Final Message:
    • The final player announces the message they received out loud to the entire group.
  6. Compare and Enjoy:
    • The starting player then reveals the original sentence or phrase. Compare the original message to the final version. Enjoy the resulting laughter or marvel at how well the message was preserved.

Tips for a Fun Game

  • Encourage Creativity: The more unique and whimsical the original message, the more fun the game becomes.
  • Maintain Silence: Ensure that players are quiet while others are whispering to avoid unintended eavesdropping.
  • Play Multiple Rounds: To keep the fun going, play several rounds with different starting players and messages.

Variations

  • Theme Messages: Choose a theme for the messages, such as holidays, movies, or famous quotes, to add an extra layer of challenge.
  • Speed Round: Introduce a time limit for each whisper to increase the pressure and hilarity.

Enjoy playing Telephone and see just how twisted a simple message can become!
