Overview
Uno is a popular card game where players take turns playing cards from their hand that match the color or number of the card on top of the discard pile. The goal is to be the first player to get rid of all your cards.
Players
2-10 players
Minimum Age
10 years old
Game Setup
Deck Preparation
Use a deck of 108 cards, including four colors (red, yellow, green, blue) each with cards numbered 0-9, and special action cards.
Deal Cards
Shuffle the deck and deal 7 cards to each player. Place the remaining deck face down to form the draw pile.
Starting the Discard Pile
Turn over the top card of the draw pile to start the discard pile. If you draw a special action card, follow the action indicated.
Special Action Cards
- Skip: Skip the next player.
- Reverse: Reverse the direction of play.
- Draw Two: The next player draws two cards and misses their turn.
- Wild: Declare the next color to be matched.
- Wild Draw Four: Declare the next color and make the next player draw four cards and miss their turn. (You can only play this if you have no other matching cards.)
Game Rules
Starting the Game
The player to the left of the dealer goes first.
Playing a Card
On your turn, match a card from your hand to the card on top of the discard pile by either color or number, or play a special action card.
Drawing Cards
If you cannot match the discard pile, draw a card from the draw pile. If the drawn card can be played, play it immediately; otherwise, your turn ends.
Calling Uno
When you have only one card left, call out “Uno!” If another player catches you not saying “Uno” before your next turn begins, draw two cards.
Winning the Game
The first player to play all their cards wins the round. Score points based on the cards remaining in the other players’ hands.
Scoring
- Number cards (0-9): Face value
- Draw Two, Reverse, Skip: 20 points each
- Wild, Wild Draw Four: 50 points each
The winner of the round scores points based on the total value of the cards left in their opponents’ hands. The first player to reach 500 points wins the game.
Additional Rules
Multiple Card Plays
Some house rules allow for playing multiple cards of the same number at once.
Stacking
Some variations allow players to stack Draw Two or Wild Draw Four cards, making the next player draw the total amount.
Variations
Partners
Play with partners sitting opposite each other, combining their scores.
