Objective
The objective of Wiffleball is to score runs by hitting a plastic ball with a bat and running around bases. The team with the most runs at the end of the game wins.
Setup
- Field: A diamond-shaped field with four bases (first base, second base, third base, and home plate).
- Equipment:
- A plastic Wiffleball.
- A plastic bat.
- Four bases or markers.
- Players: A minimum of 2 and a maximum of 10 players can participate. Players should be at least 6 years old.
Basic Rules
- Teams: Divide players into two teams, with an equal number of players on each team.
- Batting:
- The batting team takes turns hitting the ball.
- Each player gets three strikes before they are out.
- A hit ball must stay within the designated playing area to be considered fair.
- Running Bases:
- After hitting the ball, the batter runs to first base and continues to as many bases as possible.
- Fielders try to catch the ball or throw it to the bases to get the runner out.
- A runner is out if they are tagged by the ball while not on a base or if the base they are running to is tagged before they reach it.
- Scoring:
- A run is scored when a player successfully reaches home plate after running around all the bases.
- Innings:
- A game consists of a predetermined number of innings, with each team getting a chance to bat in each inning.
- An inning ends when three players from the batting team are out.
Variations
- Ghost Runners: For smaller teams, allow “ghost runners” to stand in for runners who would have been on base.
- Pitcher’s Hand: The batter is out if the pitcher catches the ball before it touches the ground.
- No Stealing Bases: To simplify the game, disallow stealing bases.
How to Play
Starting the Game
- Set up the field with four bases in a diamond shape.
- Divide players into two teams.
- Decide which team will bat first by a coin toss or mutual agreement.
Playing the Game
- The first batter hits the ball and runs to first base.
- The fielding team tries to get the batter out by catching the ball or tagging bases.
- The next batter hits, and the process repeats.
- Players score runs by completing a circuit around the bases and reaching home plate.
- Teams switch roles after three outs.
Winning the Game
- The team with the most runs at the end of the predetermined number of innings wins.
- If the game is tied, extra innings may be played until a winner is determined.
Safety Tips
- Ensure the playing area is clear of obstacles and safe for running.
- Use plastic bats and balls to prevent injuries.
- Encourage fair play and sportsmanship.
