Flashlight Tag

Flashlight Tag

Physical Outdoor

  • Players: 5 or more
  • Duration: 20 - 40 min
  • Average cost: $5

How to play

Played after dark. One player holds a flashlight and counts at base while everyone hides. Instead of tagging by touch, the seeker "tags" a player by catching them in the flashlight beam and calling their name. Named players return to base and wait. If the seeker calls the wrong name, the hider may relocate. Rotate the seeker each round so everyone gets a turn with the light. Agree on the play area in daylight first, and remove trip hazards before you start.

The Alka Seltzer Waterfight

1. Get a large group of youth together and split them into two teams. 2. Give the members of each team a colored cloth to use as an armband so that they can easily identify friends and foes. (You can also use different colors of water-guns to identify teams.) 3. Give each person a water-gun, a string, and an alka-seltzer tablet. Note: If you allow youth to bring their own water guns, specify a maximum size in order to prevent one person with a large super soaker from dominating the game. 4. Have each youth tie the tablet around their neck with the string. It must hang down the front of the shirt and be visible. 5. Have a designated refill point for each team. A couple buckets of water will do the trick. 6. Have kids wear old clothes as this can get a little messy. Rule out white t-shirts to prevent embarrassment when they get wet. Let everyone run around in a large area squirting each other with the squirt guns. If a person's tablet dissolves, he's out. First team to eliminate all the opponents wins.

Actionary

A mash-up of Pictionary, charades, and sculpting. Prepare a list of guessable words, split the group into teams, and give each team paper, pens, and a tray of modeling clay. Each round, one player per team comes to the leader, rolls a die, and learns the word plus how it must be communicated: 1–2 act it out, 3–4 draw it, 5–6 sculpt it. They race back and perform for their own team, and the first team to shout the correct word scores a point. Rotate performers each round; highest score wins.

Shadow Tag

A no-contact tag variant for sunny days. Instead of touching other players, the person who is "it" tags someone by stepping on their shadow and calling their name. Because nobody is grabbed or pushed, this version is perfect for mixed ages and small spaces. Play in an open area in the morning or late afternoon when shadows are long. Whoever is tagged becomes the new "it". For extra chaos, make everyone who is tagged also "it" until one shadow remains free.
