Newcomb Ball

Newcomb Ball

How to play

Volleyball for groups that can't rally yet. Two teams face off across a net or rope, but instead of striking the ball, players catch it and immediately throw it back over. A point goes to the other team when the ball hits the floor on your side, is thrown out of bounds, or is dropped. Rotate server positions like volleyball. It's the perfect bridge game for mixed ages — young kids can genuinely compete with adults — and you can tighten rules (three-second holds, three passes max) as skills grow.

Chair on the wall

No equipment needed — just a smooth stretch of blank wall. Everyone stands with their back flat against the wall and walks their feet forward, sliding down until they're "sitting" on an invisible chair: thighs parallel to the floor, knees at a right angle, back still against the wall, hands resting on thighs or knees (no pushing down for support). Then it's simply a matter of who can hold it. The last player still in position wins, usually with trembling legs and a lot of commentary from those who already collapsed.

Forest Soccer

Forest Soccer

Regular soccer rules, wildly irregular field: play in a forest, on a slope, or anywhere full of natural obstacles. Mark two goals a good distance apart — a gap between two trees works — and let the terrain do the rest. Trees become defenders, roots redirect passes, and the ball is never where you expect it. Keep teams small so everyone stays involved, agree on boundaries before kickoff, and walk the area first to clear anything genuinely dangerous.
